How to Color Seashells
If you live near a beach or are vacationing at the beach this summer, fill up a bucket of shells and bring them home.  These would look great in a bucket at your mermaid party- or make something with them- add them to craft projects, wreaths, or a table centerpiece.  If you have no plans to go to the beach this year, no worries, you can purchase shells from most arts and crafts stores too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
White Vinegar
White or Light-Colored Seashells
Food Coloring
Small Bowls
Spoon
Paper Towels
Easy Step-by-Step Directions:

1. Gather your shells and supplies.

2. Fill small bowls with a 5-6 drops of food coloring, one color per bowl.
Add about ⅓ cup of vinegar to each bowl.
Use a spoon to stir the vinegar and food coloring until combined.
Submerge your shells in your desired color and allow them to soak in the mixture for 1-3 hours.  This process is much like dying Easter eggs!

If you want lighter colors, shorten the soak time. If you want darker, more saturated color, leave the shells in longer.

3. Remove them from the dye and allow them to air dry on a paper towels, no blotting or rubbing is necessary.

Once completely air-dried, arrange your shells  anywhere at your mermaid party!

They look great in a clear glass vase, a bowl, glued to a wreath or party sign, or anywhere at the celebration!

You may notice that The Party Fetti Blog is not updated as often over the summer as I’ll be busy making many party decorations for summer birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations for my five Etsy shops.

This is my busiest time of year and so new blog posts and party inspiration only happens about once a month or so or when I have time in between my full-time graphic design work schedule and my weekly custom orders in my Etsy shops.

Curio Makeover Into Craft Storage

Curio Makeover Into A Craft Storage Cabinet

Today I am so excited to share this quick makeover project I worked on last weekend. I picked up this mini curio with a door and drawers at a local thrift store for under $5.00 and transformed it into a fresh and bright craft storage desk organizer.  I also love the idea of using this as a space saver for a smaller party or get-together for displaying your party decorations and tableware.  Check it out-

Let’s get started. You really only need two items for this project – a thrift found wood cabinet and spray paint.  I love the [easyazon_link identifier=”B002BWOS3K” locale=”US” tag=”ymazonffiliac-20″]Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover[/easyazon_link] (its paint and primer in one can) and I’m partial to high gloss as it really makes your bright colors pop.  Plus this paint bonds to plastic and metal as well.   It is my absolute favorite brand of spray paint for all my projects for my home shop- ONCE UPON A HOME DESIGNS, and any diy projects for my own home . . . and no, I am not being paid by Rust-Oleum for this blog post – I just love their product!

Let’s get started with the tutorial for the makeover.  First, I removed all the small hardware and screws.

I love this little wood curio because it has a black metal scroll decorative design on the front door, so I want to keep that as original and add it back on the cabinet, unpainted, once I finish the makeover.  I left the door on because I want to go ahead and paint over the metal hinges the same color, since they were originally painted in the outdated same hunter green color.  Generally, this is not recommended.  I found some nice [easyazon_link identifier=”B00V2JIQFE” locale=”US” tag=”ymazonffiliac-20″]small black decorative hinges[/easyazon_link], that I may order and replace, to match the black scroll front.

Next, I washed everything in my kitchen sink, since it was a thrift store find – I wanted to get all the dirt and dust off of it and sanitize it.  I let it dry for about an hour before painting.

Finally, I moved everything into my garage and used a big assembled cardboard box to spray paint the mini curio. Remember to open your garage doors for good ventilation.

I’m not the world’s best spray painter and normally I recruit my husband to help me out with this part of any makeover project but this paint is so wonderful, it’s hard to apply, without it looking perfect.  I sprayed the top of everything first, applying light coats about 6 to 8 inches from the top of the surface working in quick, short horizontal rows of painting.

Then, I flipped everything over and painted each side. I applied several light coats (don’t worry about getting perfect coverage on your first pass of spray painting, since a few light coats are recommended) on each side and let it dry about 20 to 30 minutes, after each coat, before applying a new coat of paint.  Several light coats helps to prevent getting too much paint in globs in any one area and to prevent dripping.

I also didn’t worry about getting complete, perfect coverage on the bottom of the drawers and inside the drawer insert areas, since they would never been seen once the drawers are inserted.  After I painted each side a few times, I allowed it dry over-night in my garage. There were quite a few imperfections in the wood on this little cabinet, so keep in mind lighter brighter colors will show those imperfections more than a darker paint color.  Still I think this contemporary makeover of the mini cabinet is fresh and way more fun in this bright key lime green.

Now, I have a bright and colorful addition to my work studio!

Oh, you know I have enough craft supplies to fill it up!  I love it too because it is small and does not take up too much space on my work desk but it also has deep drawers.

A small curio cabinet like this one would be great anywhere in the home, I could see it in the kitchen for keeping your favorite spices near the oven, in the garage for storing bolts and nails, or even on display on your party table for housing all your serving utensils and sweets at your next celebration.

[easyazon_link identifier=”B00WHXQIJA” locale=”US” tag=”ymazonffiliac-20″]Jute twine[/easyazon_link]

Once you have everything you need to get started, lay down some newspaper to protect your table or work area where you will be painting.

First, wipe down your jar or jars with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils from fingerprints and any dirt.  Allow to dry for about ten minutes.

Start by painting the lower part or the bottom of the jar with your lighter green paint and allow to dry. Add a second coat when dry.

Paint the top of the jar with red paint. Paint a second coat of red when dry.

After your initial two coats in each color are dry, paint snake-like curvy lines in a vertical direction on your lower green section to create the appearance of the watermelon rind.  Don’t be concerned with how even these two colors are at the middle because you are going to paint over the meetup point of the two colors on the jar which will therefore clean it up.

Next, divide your red and green painted sections on the jar by painting a nice even and straight line with your white paint.

Add a few watermelon seeds to the top red area in a random pattern.  TIP: Rather than painting the seeds by hand, I prefer to use the bottom handle of my paint brush to make the seeds. Just dip the pointed end of your brush into the black paint and simply add a round dot.  Then, immediately, before your dot dries, flip your brush and pull the dot out to a teardrop shape with the tip of your brush.  As a result, this is much easier than trying paint on a perfect seed shape.

Finally, allow your painted jar to dry for a few hours.  Add your jute twine bow at the neck of your jar. Next, fill it up with your forks, spoons and knives.  Now you are ready to serve your guests.

These are so adorable for any summertime gathering!

Thanks for stopping by the blog.

Easy & Fast Easter Garland Tutorial

EASTER RIBBON GARLAND TUTORIAL

Decorate your Easter celebration or your next party or event with a cheerful,  easy and fast ribbon garland to match your theme.  It will only take you about 20 to 30 minutes at the most to cut all your ribbon and tie them up since minimal assembly is needed, this garland is made from simple loop knots — no glue or sewing needed!  Let’s get started-

Here’s What You’ll Need:

– Twine or Jute String (length depends on how long you want your garland)

30-35 ft. of Ribbon (different designs/several rolls)

– Scissors

How to Step-by-Step Directions:

Step 1. – Measure a strand of twine to the desired length of your garland.

Step 2. – Cut each piece of ribbon to measure 16-20″ depending on your desired length. Use different color ribbons to match the décor of your event or space.

Step 3. – Fold each piece of ribbon in half, lay it around the twine, and pull the cut strands through the loop to create a loose knot (see image #1 and #2).

Step 4.- Repeat step three for all remaining ribbons, alternating colors to create a pattern (see image #3).

Step 5. – Once all ribbons are tied, trim the ends if needed with scissors. Hang the garland to decorate a party table or kid’s room!

You can even keep this garland and reuse it for future parties or room décor.   If you make one in plain pastel colors with no Easter text printed on your ribbon, these would look stunning in a nursery, hanging across the front of a baby’s crib or in a little girls room hanging across her bed headboard. If you want to get your home ready for spring or need some favor boxes, a banner or anything for your Easter celebration- stop by any of my shops by clicking the links below.

The last day to order with first class shipping for receipt by Easter is Wednesday, April 5th and with priority shipping the last day to order is next Tuesday, April 11th.

HOW TO MAKE A POM POM GARLAND & COOL POM POM CRAFTS

Screen-Shot-2016-03-23-at-9.43.44-PM-1024x575

There is really no step-by-step instructions to make a pom pom garland.  Its so easy, all you need is pom poms, an embroidery needle with a large opening and string or baker’s twine.

Felt Garland DIY

Simply thread your needle and then pierce the middle of each pom pom and pull your needle through the other end of the pom pom. Easy! Deciding which kind of pom poms to use for your garland or any pom pom crafts will probably be the hardest part.  Pom Poms actually can be handmade or store bought in a few different materials.

felt poms

Felt poms are more dense and are a bit more difficult to hand make.

Yarn pom poms are the most common and are the easiest to make by hand.  You can simply use your fingers or purchase a pom pom making tool, which makes it go much faster.

I am actually kind of obsessed with pom poms and I keep several glass jars of them in my studio. When I’m having a bad day, I just put my hand in the jar and squeeze.  It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.  Yeah – I just admitted that!
