There have been a couple of patriotic holidays recently and I feel like we made enough red, white and blue decorations to use once for each and still have some left over.  So…. we’re going to switch it up a little bit! Here are some decorative, tasty and healthy alternatives to our favorite 4th of July BBQ foods.

This Blueberry, Strawberry and Jicama Salsa by Two Peas and Their Pod is a sweet and summery alternative to the tomato or corn that is typically used.  This is quite tasty on a bed of greens, or scooped up with your favorite chip or cracker.

RWB Eggs

Created by Diane has directions for Red, White and Blue Deviled Eggs.  I’ve never dyed egg whites before but I do devil the yolk using a similar recipe (sub full fat organic yogurt instead of fat free, skip the mayo, use your favorite organic mustard, and add a dash of white vinegar).

Watermelon jicama slaw

Another way to use jicama is in this Watermelon Salad by Will Cook For Friends.  While it uses some of the same ingredients as the salsa, what it doesn’t have in common is what makes it taste different and stand out as a separate dish.

Mix it up with this Red, White and Blue Potato Salad I found on My Recipes.  You can always skip the oil and add some of that Organic Full Fat Yogurt for a little creaminess.  I like to use shallot as opposed to garlic and onion.  It brings the flavor of both to the table without being potent – and the odor doesn’t stick around quite as much!

Chicken Apple Hot Dogs with Blueberry Ketchup sounds like a delicious way to mix up the standard dog on a bun.  Foodie has the recipe.

Try out some Red, White and Blue Turkey Burger Sliders as well!  You can find the details at Diets in Review.

And for dessert, SkinnyTaste has Red, White and Blue Fruit Skewers with Yogurt Dip is a great way to finish it off (again, sub full fat yogurt and cream cheese).  I usually whip up some strawberry glaze to dip to get a little strawberry shortcake action in with the mix!

*The reason I’m particular about using full fat items instead of low fat/light/etc is because of the individual ingredients in the product.  Not all, but many companies use fillers, high fructose corn syrup, or even sugar to replace the natural fats and improve the flavor.  It’s just a personal preference, I’m not trying to dissuade anyone from their typical buying preferences.

Below are some of the amazing custom items we shipped out this year from our Etsy shops for the 4th of July holiday.

Memorial Weekend Adult Treats

Strawberry Margarita & Hard Mike’s Lemonade Popsicles

Strawberry Margarita Popsicles  ~ Summer entertaining doesn’t get much easier than these fun Strawberry Margarita Popsicles.
Strawberry Margarita Popsicles

Strawberry Margarita Popsicles
These are a perfect treat for the adults in the now warmer weather for your Memorial Day holiday gathering.  Do something different than just serving a drink in a glass or can.
There are many more recipes for some unusual drinks and treats at the Bakers Royale blog-  Chocolatini Pudding Shooters, Appletini Cupcakes, Lemon Drop Jello Shooters, Rock Candy Midori Jello Shooters.
A few notes:
  • No recipe, just an easy entertaining idea that requires some Dixie cups, popsicles sticks and Mike’s Hard Lemonade Strawberry Margarita. As a side note, the traditional margarita made with Tequila needs a much colder temperature to freeze than the tradtional home unit allows, so that’s why something like these Mike’s Hard Lemonade is better suited for making these popsicles.
  • To assemble: Pour and freeze the Strawberry Margarita for two hours then insert the popsicle sticks in the middle. Freeze for another two hours or until the Strawberry Margarita Popsicles solidify. Garnish with a lime and serve.
  • Small note, do not rim with salt until serving time as the salt will melt the pops. Alternatively, you can rim the Strawberry Margarita Pops with chunky crystal sugar for an aesethetic effect without worrying about the melting factor.
  • To keep popsicles chilled as long as possible, place the serving tray in the freezer and then top  the tray with a layer of crushed iced.

Enjoy and have a wonderful Memorial Day holiday weekend!

St. Patrick’s Day Kids Crafts

On March 17th, the luck of the Irish is with you and the kids with these leprechaun approved St. Patrick’s Day crafts, recipes, printables, and games.

Made this fun project the other day!   I was tired of having a drawer full of Order-In / To-Go Menu’s as its just the two of us in our little family, we order out quit often.  I design this so it could hang or be magnetized to the fridge and has several pockets for favorite recipes, coupons, and menus.  Fun bright colors and always easy access.
No more messy drawer!
Have a WonderFUL WednesDAY!
