FALL HOME TOUR

Why My Home Is Not Farmhouse Style

There is one thing you should know about our home- it is not farmhouse style and thank goodness! I need COLOR!

Fall is my favorite season, because of all the bright colors of autumn. I like my pumpkins orange and not white and grey. No offence to those who have white decor, white walls, white furniture and white everything.  I do love neutrals – looking at all those ivory, grey, and tan shades is certainly calming and wonderful . . . in someone else’s home. As for me, I went with neutral walls so that I could change out my home decor every season with a pop of color.

Today I am sharing a few areas of my home decorated for fall, starting with our entry table above that is a layered abundance of fall floral arrangements and rustic accents. Yes, I painted that scarecrow stave in the corner many years ago and made the fall wood sign last year.

Our dining room has a wonderful large bay window that lets in so much light in the morning – of course I took these photos a bit late in the afternoon, so even with my flash on and lights all turned on, its a bit dark, but I think its still bright enough to show off.  One of my favorite pieces in our home is the wood box centerpiece on our dining room table – I change it up every season.  Right now it’s filled with leaves, glitter pumpkins, acorns and three electric candles.

My husband made the hanging wood piece above our buffet.  I designed it, but he built it for me last year.  I added the lanterns and switch out the wreath for different holidays.

We just purchased this sideboard cabinet a few weeks ago- it has stunning details, which is why I fell in love with it, plus it was refinished.  I found it at our local area pop up shops in Kansas City, called the West Bottoms.  I love shopping there- I always find recycled home decor and vintage treasure!

This is our kitchen and informal dining room fireplace and my favorite place in the home.  On cold winter nights we turn on the gas fireplace and eat dinner at this cozy table-

Last are a few of my side tables decorated for fall around our home.

Finally, a few items I’ve tucked in that are actually for sale over at my home decor shop on Etsy-  Once Upon A Home Designs

Christmas Home Tour Part II

CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR PART II

christmashtmainimagecollage1

Earlier this week, I showed you my home decorated for Christmas in the evening.  Today I am taking you on a daytime Christmas home tour.

Let’s start with the front door and inside entry-

christmashtentry2

I have added string lights all over the outside of the front door display, as well as to my deer and other inside front entrance Christmas decor. I love my antique sled found a few years ago at an estate sale.

Next, a few more up close photos of my decorated entry side table and past the stairs into the formal living room.christmashtentry2upclosecollage We have two full fireplaces in this house and while I love both of them, it has been a challenge to decorate two large mantles this year.  I have had to split most of my Christmas decorations between the two mantels. I plan to make some improvements and additions next year to our formal living room fireplace for Christmas decor and some new art.  Below is my minimal set up for it this year.

christmashtformallivingroomcollageOur new large tree sits in the corner of the formal living room and we also have a smaller feather tree with a hand painted base in our kitchen dining area.  Below is our kitchen eat-in, which I love. We have 18 foot vaulted ceilings in the room, lots of windows, a sliding glass door out to our deck and a second fireplace.  For our kitchen dining table set up – I went with a cozy button tufted settee and two crushed velvet high back chairs.  We spend a lot of time in here, so I went with plush but comfortable seating.   I made that fun Santa wreath a few years ago- looks great hanging on our door that leads to the garage.

In this same room, we have a built in buffet- I call it the wine buffet.  I love to decorate it for the holidays too.

Here is my collection of woodland creatures, Santa figurines, and snowmen.

Last, is our formal dining room with the farmhouse wood box that I made filled with Christmas greenery and gold glitter pine cones.

Come back in a few days and see all my hand painted Christmas decorations and ornaments that I have made over the years.  I can’t wait to show you my handmade collection.

Christmas Home Tour Part 1

CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR PART I

My plan today was to share a full home tour after getting all the Christmas decorations up but my Canon point and shoot camera has been giving me problems (the shutter is staying open too long) when I photograph in low light.  Any photographers out there. . . please help and please post in the comments to give me some pointers on how to fix this in my settings on my Canon 5x/16.0 camera?  I did manage to clean them up a bit with Photoshop- but you can clearly see the blurry line running through all my photos, where the shutter is not quite closed.  Ugh!

Christmas Home Tour 2016

So instead I am just posting a few of the photos that I took last night that I managed to do a quick touch up.  I’ll take some better daytime photos this week and get them posted later in the week for the Home Tour Part II.

Above is our formal living room with our stone fireplace with my decorated mantle and our staircase that I added Christmas greenery and lanterns on top of our banister pillars – our house is lit up every where at night.  Every nook of the house features sparkling lights.  I may have gone a tad overboard on the electric lights.

Our dining room- see the reclaimed wood farmhouse XMAS sign on the buffet – I made it!

Our little woodland creatures table – I love the trendy animals made from wood, pine cones, and other natural materials that have been popular the past few years.

Christmas Tree

Our Christmas tree really came out amazing this year.  We bought a larger 9 foot tree since we have vaulted ceilings – I finally got the tall Christmas tree I always wanted.  Later this week, I will share many of the handmade ornaments and other hand painted Christmas decorations I have made over the years.

Christmas EntranceThis is my favorite part of our home – the front inside entry.  I plan to transition this table for every season.  I made the JOY reclaimed wood sign as well for this table.

Stay tuned for some gift giving ideas on Wednesday and the second part of my Christmas home tour -the day time tour with much better photos- I promise!

Fall Home Tour Part 1 – Halloween Spooky Night Tour

FALL HOME TOUR PART I

Halloween Skeleton

Happy Tuesday! Today I am sharing the first part of my fall home tour.  This is the evening tour for some of my more spooky and whimsical Halloween decorations.  I love this floral infused skeleton that I added lights to really make him stand out at night.  Here he is situated at my interior front door entrance.

Fall Home Tour

This year I decided to decorate early for fall but transition to Halloween just a few nights before the holiday.  I don’t actually have all my Halloween decorations out yet.  Would you believe I still have about five boxes of Halloween decor that we plan to put out tomorrow night for Halloween!?  I know, crazy, right? I don’t think my hubby is as excited about the last minute decorating as me, since we will take it all down within a day or so after the holiday.  Halloween is my favorite holiday and fall is my favorite season – so of course I go all out to decorate our home.

Halloween Decorations

These cinema light letter boxes are all the rage right now and I used mine (it is usually my business sign in my studio) to add a Happy Halloween message at our front door entrance.  I am thinking I may change it to “BOO!” to fit the letters better though.  Last year I added this fun dual skeleton bicyclist statue to our Halloween decor.  I have nicknamed them Ray and Charles Eames.  If you know a little design history- it’s appropriate because they were an adorable husband and wife design team that are famous for this photo-

charles-and-ray-eames-1-638

It is also perfect in our home since my husband and I are avoid cyclists. Here is a close up-

Spooky Cyclists Decoration

Last year I built this farmhouse style wood box for our dining room and I transition its contents for every season- I’ve added some fall leaves and pine cones and electric candles for fall.

Farmhouse Candlebox Centerpiece

This close up view shows the box contents a bit better-

Farmhouse Fall Decor

Keep in mind, I took these photos at night – so even with the flash and some Photoshop editing – they are looking dark, but I wanted to convey the ambiance of our home at night with everything lit up.

Halloween Eyeball Flowers

I made these whimsical eyeball flowers or eyeball roses last year. If you were not following the blog last year – I posted an easy tutorial on how to make them.

You can still view the DIY instructions here – SPOOKY EYEBALL TUTORIAL

Come back later this week to see the second part of my fall home tour- the daytime photos.

Keep in mind, the last day to checkout for Halloween decorations if buying from my Etsy shops via Priority is this Wednesday, Oct. 26th to receive before the holiday.  However I still have plenty of fall decorations to get you through Thanksgiving!
