Today I am sharing a tutorial for a diy painted watermelon utensil holder made from a glass mason jar.  I love creative ideas for displaying my utensils and cutlery at a summer barbecue or party.  This easy to make watermelon utensil holder is perfect for a summer get together or if you are planning a watermelon themed party!  Be sure to check out all my previous posts here on the blog for  – WATERMELON PARTIES!

Let’s get started with making these fun utensil holders.  Gather your supplies.  I’ve made it easy for you to order online- simply click on the supplies below.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

Mason jar
(use multi-surface or glass paint)
Black paint
Light green paint

White paint
Paint brushes
Jute twine

Once you have everything you need to get started, lay down some newspaper to protect your table or work area where you will be painting.

First, wipe down your jar or jars with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils from fingerprints and any dirt.  Allow to dry for about ten minutes.

Start by painting the lower part or the bottom of the jar with your lighter green paint and allow to dry. Add a second coat when dry.

Paint the top of the jar with red paint. Paint a second coat of red when dry.

After your initial two coats in each color are dry, paint snake-like curvy lines in a vertical direction on your lower green section to create the appearance of the watermelon rind.  Don’t be concerned with how even these two colors are at the middle because you are going to paint over the meetup point of the two colors on the jar which will therefore clean it up.

Next, divide your red and green painted sections on the jar by painting a nice even and straight line with your white paint.

Add a few watermelon seeds to the top red area in a random pattern.  TIP: Rather than painting the seeds by hand, I prefer to use the bottom handle of my paint brush to make the seeds. Just dip the pointed end of your brush into the black paint and simply add a round dot.  Then, immediately, before your dot dries, flip your brush and pull the dot out to a teardrop shape with the tip of your brush.  As a result, this is much easier than trying paint on a perfect seed shape.

Finally, allow your painted jar to dry for a few hours.  Add your jute twine bow at the neck of your jar. Next, fill it up with your forks, spoons and knives.  Now you are ready to serve your guests.

These are so adorable for any summertime gathering!

Cinco de Mayo Party Decorating Ideas

Cinco de Mayo Party Roundup

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner and today I wanted to share a roundup of amazing tablescapes & party decorating ideas perfect for the holiday.

First, a quick reminder that all my shops are CLOSING for a week for a brief vacation to get all my new spring and summer party decor ready to add to the shops!  So, if you are planning a party coming up in the near future. . . hurry by to browse as I’m only taking ready to ship orders until the end of this week and all custom orders are scheduled out three to four weeks.

These bright designs I’m featuring today are also perfect for a fiesta party, a cumpleaños or a quinceañera too.

Fiesta

I love the stripes of colorful ribbon laid over this table. So easy to make this table design by just laying a solid color tablecloth down and cutting stripes of wide colorful ribbon and laying over the tablecloth.   And don’t forget the PAPEL PICADO BANNER, seen in this photo above, which is a lacey cut banner often found exclusive to Mexican parties and fiestas. The designs often feature intricate cut flowers, cactus, suns, or starburst and medallion motifs.

Sombrero

This is a simple table design so easy to create with a single sombrero and a few RAINBOW colors of crepe paper.

This is a super easy table backdrop as well.  Use either oversized flowers in bright colors or tissue pom poms attached to your wall or flat surface behind your table.  I love the floral tablecloth too as a nice diversion from the usual rainbow or solid bright colors at most fiesta parties.

Paper pinwheels

Add some PINWHEELS in any size for a pop of color and whimsy too!  Create some height by adding them to the back of your table or put them all in one vase for a table centerpiece display.

camplenos

Add some inexpensive live cactus to the table too!  Such an easy way to add height and a traditional plant.  If you can find some flowering, even better!  This is an easy way to display and wrap up your plastic utensils too.  Use inexpensive different mixed colors of napkins and add some bright fancy paper STRAWS!

hanging fans

Of course you can never go wrong with bright and colorful live flowers.  Pair them with a background of colorful FANS and bright lanterns for a layered effect.

This is actually a birdbath, but if the top small dish is left off, it would be perfect for displaying a tiered cake at a Cinco de Mayo party.  Or fill up the top saucer with candy or place your punch bowl on top.  So many ideas and easy to make this pedestal too.

If you are buying now to receive by May 5th- be sure to select PRIORITY from my shops shipping options to receive in time!
