Mermaid Party DIY Project

DIY Project For A Mermaid Party

Today I am sharing an easy way to brighten up your Mermaid party and add some inexpensive colorful seashells!  While you could go with regular seashells straight out of the ocean- why not give your shells a color make over?  This project is super easy too!

How to Color Seashells
If you live near a beach or are vacationing at the beach this summer, fill up a bucket of shells and bring them home.  These would look great in a bucket at your mermaid party- or make something with them- add them to craft projects, wreaths, or a table centerpiece.  If you have no plans to go to the beach this year, no worries, you can purchase shells from most arts and crafts stores too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
White Vinegar
White or Light-Colored Seashells
Food Coloring
Small Bowls
Paper Towels
Easy Step-by-Step Directions:

1. Gather your shells and supplies.

2. Fill small bowls with a 5-6 drops of food coloring, one color per bowl.
Add about ⅓ cup of vinegar to each bowl.
Use a spoon to stir the vinegar and food coloring until combined.
Submerge your shells in your desired color and allow them to soak in the mixture for 1-3 hours.  This process is much like dying Easter eggs!

If you want lighter colors, shorten the soak time. If you want darker, more saturated color, leave the shells in longer.

3. Remove them from the dye and allow them to air dry on a paper towels, no blotting or rubbing is necessary.

Once completely air-dried, arrange your shells  anywhere at your mermaid party!

They look great in a clear glass vase, a bowl, glued to a wreath or party sign, or anywhere at the celebration!

You may notice that The Party Fetti Blog is not updated as often over the summer as I’ll be busy making many party decorations for summer birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations for my five Etsy shops.

This is my busiest time of year and so new blog posts and party inspiration only happens about once a month or so or when I have time in between my full-time graphic design work schedule and my weekly custom orders in my Etsy shops.

Subscribe by email and get new stunning party ideas in your email inbox every time I add new party inspiration! Add your email address in the subscribe box on the right hand side of my website page for emailed updates and never miss a new blog post!

Frozen Party DIY Hanging Decor

Happy Monday!  Today I am sharing a quick and super easy DIY for creating some beautiful decorations for a Disney Frozen themed party or any winter themed event!  Perfect for a Winter Wonderland party too! It’s so easy, just follow the visual How To tutorial below.  For larger hanging table backdrop snowflakes, just increase the size by double or triple for each of the cut pieces. You can cut your rolled cones larger for the snowflakes by turning your letterhead page to profile, instead of landscape, and cut each one larger, one to a page.  Or simply use 12″ x 12″ cardstock in solid colors of shades of blue or scrapbooking pattern paper.

Before we get to the visual tutorial, in case I forgot to tell my regular followers-

Valentine’s Day Doily Wreath Tutorial

Doily Wreath

I love the trending vintage style and it fits so well with Valentine’s Day decor.  Today I am sharing a DIY tutorial on how to make a vintage style wreath for Valentine’s Day from paper lace doilies.  So easy and inexpensive!  Let’s get started:

  • 1 Styrofoam Wreath Form (any size you want)
  • Lace Paper Doilies (approx. 100 to 150 and in any color)
  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Ribbon (for hanging)

Where to get your doilies?  READY SET CRAFT KITS shop offers round and heart shape DOILIES

Ready Set Craft Kits

If you want to order them in online or you can pick them up locally this time of year, with Valentine’s Day coming up, they seem to be available at most big retail box stores or your local arts and crafts supply store.

Create Folded Doilies –  Take each doily, fold it in half in the middle, bring one end of the doily to the center of your fold in the front (where your thumb is) and the other end to the middle in the back to create an “S” shape or an accordion fold.  It is best to do all your folding before hot gluing them to your wreath. See the tutorial below for a better visual-

While holding your folded doily, add a small dot of hot glue at the bottom point where the folds come together.

Assemble Wreath – Once you have made all your folds, you are ready to start adding them to your wreath.  Add a small amount of hot glue to the base of each doily and bend the base or pointed end slightly to adhere to your styrofoam wreath.  The folded doilies look best applied at various angles to fill out the wreath.

How To Make A Doily Wreath

Apply your doilies fairly close together so they will appear fluffy and full.  Add in more doilies as your work around your wreath.  Once completely covered, you may fill in holes with more doilies if you notice some open areas on your wreath form.  Add a looped ribbon to the back for hanging, or you can simply loop it around your finished wreath to hang it.
