WATERMELON UTENSIL HOLDER TUTORIAL

Easy DIY Tutorial Craft Project

Today I am sharing a tutorial for a diy painted watermelon utensil holder made from a glass mason jar.  I love creative ideas for displaying my utensils and cutlery at a summer barbecue or party.  This easy to make watermelon utensil holder is perfect for a summer get together or if you are planning a watermelon themed party!  Be sure to check out all my previous posts here on the blog for  – WATERMELON PARTIES!

Let’s get started with making these fun utensil holders.  Gather your supplies.  I’ve made it easy for you to order online- simply click on the supplies below.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

Mason jar
Red paint (use multi-surface or glass paint)
Black paint
Light green paint
Darker green paint
White paint
Paint brushes
Jute twine

Once you have everything you need to get started, lay down some newspaper to protect your table or work area where you will be painting.

First, wipe down your jar or jars with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils from fingerprints and any dirt.  Allow to dry for about ten minutes.

Start by painting the lower part or the bottom of the jar with your lighter green paint and allow to dry. Add a second coat when dry.

Paint the top of the jar with red paint. Paint a second coat of red when dry.

After your initial two coats in each color are dry, paint snake-like curvy lines in a vertical direction on your lower green section to create the appearance of the watermelon rind.  Don’t be concerned with how even these two colors are at the middle because you are going to paint over the meetup point of the two colors on the jar which will therefore clean it up.

Next, divide your red and green painted sections on the jar by painting a nice even and straight line with your white paint.

Add a few watermelon seeds to the top red area in a random pattern.  TIP: Rather than painting the seeds by hand, I prefer to use the bottom handle of my paint brush to make the seeds. Just dip the pointed end of your brush into the black paint and simply add a round dot.  Then, immediately, before your dot dries, flip your brush and pull the dot out to a teardrop shape with the tip of your brush.  As a result, this is much easier than trying paint on a perfect seed shape.

Finally, allow your painted jar to dry for a few hours.  Add your jute twine bow at the neck of your jar. Next, fill it up with your forks, spoons and knives.  Now you are ready to serve your guests.

These are so adorable for any summertime gathering!

4TH OF JULY MASON JARS AS UTENSIL HOLDERS

4th of July Mason Jars

Independence Day is several weeks away, but it is always one of those holidays that sneaks up on you.  A busy summer full of outdoor activities means that the holiday arrives before you can plan ahead for your 4th of July barbeque or family gathering.  This year I will be helping to remind you by posting several patriotic themed projects, crafts, and decorating ideas over the next few weeks to help you get ready.  Consider this your first reminder!

I love the idea of housing your plastic utensils or silverware for any party or barbeque in DIY decorated mason jars.

This project is so easy.  All you need is red, white and blue acrylic paint, a paintbrush, and some painter’s tape.

July 4th Mason Jars

You can paint the inside of each jar solid red, white and blue for an easy and quick version of this project! I like the dry sponge painting method for this idea – it gives the jars a more rustic look since you end up with more of a splotchy painted look.

However, to paint them to mimic the American Flag, paint one solid blue, let dry and freehand or use a stencil to paint white stars on top of your dried blue paint.  Next, for the other two mason jars, paint them solid white and let dry. Add painters tape in several straight lines or rows around your white jars and paint red stripes, to create your red and white stripes.
