How to Color Seashells
If you live near a beach or are vacationing at the beach this summer, fill up a bucket of shells and bring them home.  These would look great in a bucket at your mermaid party- or make something with them- add them to craft projects, wreaths, or a table centerpiece.  If you have no plans to go to the beach this year, no worries, you can purchase shells from most arts and crafts stores too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
White Vinegar
White or Light-Colored Seashells
Food Coloring
Small Bowls
Spoon
Paper Towels
Easy Step-by-Step Directions:

1. Gather your shells and supplies.

2. Fill small bowls with a 5-6 drops of food coloring, one color per bowl.
Add about ⅓ cup of vinegar to each bowl.
Use a spoon to stir the vinegar and food coloring until combined.
Submerge your shells in your desired color and allow them to soak in the mixture for 1-3 hours.  This process is much like dying Easter eggs!

If you want lighter colors, shorten the soak time. If you want darker, more saturated color, leave the shells in longer.

3. Remove them from the dye and allow them to air dry on a paper towels, no blotting or rubbing is necessary.

Once completely air-dried, arrange your shells  anywhere at your mermaid party!

They look great in a clear glass vase, a bowl, glued to a wreath or party sign, or anywhere at the celebration!

You may notice that The Party Fetti Blog is not updated as often over the summer as I’ll be busy making many party decorations for summer birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations for my five Etsy shops.

This is my busiest time of year and so new blog posts and party inspiration only happens about once a month or so or when I have time in between my full-time graphic design work schedule and my weekly custom orders in my Etsy shops.

Hot Party & Wedding Trends For 2018

Last week I talked about balloons in creative and big arrangements- see here, as the top party decorating trend in 2018 and how flower backdrops are on the rise and trending in 2018, as well.

Today I am sharing some additional popular party and wedding decor ideas for this year.

Easy Balloon Backdrop DIY

However, first I wanted to recommend a balloon set up that is inexpensive and easy to create.  A simple layered row of balloons behind a table, like the two tablescapes above, that can easily be created with either a row of single giant balloons in 24 or 36 inch size with a few balloon weights like the set up below.

If you need to create a party table backdrop with a bit more dramatic height, use 15 to 25 smaller 12 inch size balloons in your party color scheme.  Secure the balloons by using plastic curling ribbon and tie them to a 2 x 4 foot, 6 foot or 8 foot lumber board with a few rows of either nails or hooks screwed into the board. Easy! Just lay your board behind your table and tie all your balloons at varying heights to the nails or hooks.

Any decor with PANTONE color of the year

Ultra Violet has been selected as the color of the year, it is a guarantee to be all over events this year, especially weddings and bridal showers. This deep shade of purple will be popular for dresses, wedding invitations, and flower arrangements.

Marble AND Copper

Metallic tones have been popular for a few years now with gold and gold glitter dominating in 2014 to 2016 and rose gold was huge in the last two years. This year copper is the favored metallic color.  Marble and copper together is a timeless look that is all over the home decor scene this year.  It is perfect for any celebration too- not just at weddings.

Marble balloons, also called marbleized balloons or swirl balloons, look stunning at birthday parties.

Geometric Shapes & Translucent Designs

Clear signs and translucent decor are stunning at weddings and easily coordinate with any color scheme.

Edgy and pointed is hot this year too- especially in copper geometric style vases and candle holders.

Nature & Flower Backdrops

A few weeks ago, I featured how to design event backdrops with giant paper flowers – see it here

However,  solid greenery is popular as well.  Whether it is for your food and drink tables, photo backgrounds, elaborate backdrops are not going anywhere.  The trend is toward more natural elements like using boxwood and other greenery, floral drapes and swags. It has its roots in the French Baroque art period, which is called festooning.

All White Party & All White Bridal Shower

This theme is all about formal and getting all gussied up.  Heels and hats for the ladies and suits for the men all in white – all the way down to the food and tableware at an all white party.  These are huge for bridal showers or the ladies bachelorette party.  Think of it as – the Kentucky Derby meets prom with all the ladies in the bridal party for a fancy pants night out on the town!  However, this year, the ladies are bringing the men out with them.

Hygge & Cozy Inspired

If you find you are not a pro decorator and don’t have a large party budget, this is the event styling theme for you.  Pulled from the, the Danish word/concept hygge, pronounced hoo-ga and there really is no literal translation for it in English but comfort is the closest meaning.  It alludes to a feeling of cozy intimacy and contentment. It’s all about creating feelings of happiness, friendliness embracing every day, stay at home luxuries in order to foster a sense of familiarity, comfort and kinship. Translation for event styling –  simple and laid back.  Popular home events and themes are adult slumber party, potlucks, movie watch party, and game night. It is all about staying in with close friends.  This all equals hygge inspired.
