Gardening Tips for Spring Landscape Planning

Stone Fire Pit

Who would not love to have that amazing firepit in their backyard?

This is a little off-topic from my usual party tips here on The Party Fetti Blog but spring is just around the corner and if you love to entertain, its time to get that deck, patio,  and backyard area ready for the warmer weather for inviting guests to a barbecue or for a small summer gathering outside.  I also thought we could all use a little spring dreaming and inspiration since so many of us are under a blanket of white snow right now.

We are getting ready to begin some landscaping and backyard deck projects of our own, so I have been on Pinterest searching for some inspiration for gardening, landscaping, and general outdoor living space projects.  Here are some wonderful ideas I found that I plan to incorporate into our outdoor spaces around our home.

I love the simplicity of this flat wood deck with just a pergola for some added shade over it.  I love this design but I would have some seating benches or two feet high rectangular wood potters around the outer edges of the deck, for safety reasons.  I am not sure what code is for a raised deck but I could see people taking a step backwards and accidentally falling off this deck.  The benches and potters on the edges would create a barrier to prevent falls.

I love this idea of creating small space for two for a relaxing conversation space away from the party crowd, plus the dividing fence is ideal since we have two large dogs.  We decided we do not want to spend the money for a full privacy fence around our large backyard, but I would love to run a dividing fence like this to add some privacy near the house and to keep the dogs out in the backyard away from guests.

I would love to have this custom build drop deck, but I am sure it is out of our budget.  Some day, maybe.

I do love this open patio area with the semi covered roof.  Its not quite a full roof but a bit more coverage than a pergola offers.  Nice set up for entertaining too.

This is perfect for adding some height to the garden and an unusual walking path.  We currently have what I like to call the ‘sink hole’ in one corner of our backyard.  It drops about two feet and would be quite costly to level with fill dirt.  Instead I have decided to make it our wild flower and butterfly garden area.  I’m just going to toss some sunflower seeds in the back and rows of wild flowers at varying heights in the front areas and let mother nature take hold.  We’ll see how that goes?  I think this would be idea in front of it with bird baths, birdhouses and a bench on either side of the rim of the slope for a relaxing area to sit and look at the flowers.

Okay, maybe not this elaborate, but a girl can dream!  Maybe a bit more realistic like this-

I will be incorporating some garden art like this into various areas of the backyard.  I love art and so of course the backyard will have some of my own DIY projects that I plan to share here on the blog along the way and throughout next spring and summer.

An outdoor living space would not be complete without lighting.  If you recall from one of my previous posts discussing the importance of lighting, CLICK HERE FOR THAT POST, in the home- it is just as vital outdoors as well for creating ambiance and good lighting for guest to walk around at night at an outdoor event.

Pinwheels At A Local Festival

Pinwheel Bunting

Today I am sharing some photos of a small public festival where my handmade pinwheels were featured recently.

Paper Pinwheels

While I have worked with many marketing firms and event planners helping with decorations for promo events- one of my favorite event planning companies is, KLIK Parties, and I have worked with them a few times to help them create stunning events for their clients.  I just love Klee and Nikki’s party styling.  They really take it to the next level!

Pinwheel Table Centerpiece

This was a local small public festival that the KLIK style gurus decorated for the annual Pops Concert and Picnic on the lawn of The Street Chestnut Hill featuring a 50-piece philharmonic orchestra.  My fun pinwheels swirled in the breeze as the music played.

You can visit their Facebook page to see some of their other amazing party, wedding, and event designs –

They are located in the Boston, MA area so if live in the area and need help with a wedding or event, I highly recommend KLIK as your event styling team!

If you need a set of custom twirling paper pinwheels for your next promo event, party or wedding, visit my shop – PINWHEEL PRETTIES

While I didn’t create the bunting on display at this event- I certainly can!

Come back next week to see my fall house tour.

Yep! I finally got everything unpacked and even managed to decorate the house for autumn.  We are loving the new house and I can’t wait to show it off.

Brighten Up Your Outdoor Living Space

Hopefully all the spring rain has dried up where you live and you are ready to dust off the grill and get outdoors.  If you are like me, we spend most evenings out on our deck in the spring and summer and we host barbeques and parties quite a bit during the warmer season.  We grill almost every night and enjoy the backyard.  So, I really have a bright and cheerful outdoor living space and this year we added a heavy duty metal pergola cover with a canvas shade for added privacy and to keep it cooler in the summer heat. Today I want to share some ideas for bringing color to your outdoor living space to make it party-friendly and inviting.

1.)  Add some bright paper lanterns for a pop of color overhead and for lighting after dark.

2.) Bring in an unusual piece of furniture and use it in a unique way- like this sewing table converted into a plant stand. And paint all furniture a bright color! Now is the time to find curbside treasures that you can upcycle into something new for your outdoor living space!

3.) Flowers and plants are the easiest way to add color to your deck or patio. Add a flower box or fill up the corners of your area with varying heights and colors of flowers.

4.) Additional seating in the yard with multi colored chairs.  These adirondack chairs come in different colors at most home stores but you can also paint those cheap plastic chairs in different colors if you are on a budget.  Or old metal chairs are super easy to spiff up and paint.

5.) Use bright colors of rugs, pillows, and home decor accessories to decorate your outdoor living space.

6.) If hosting an outdoor party- add some whimsy to your event with yard art, garden sculptures or PINWHEELS are always loved by guests!

7.) Paint your backdoor a bright color.  This will freshen up your space and make your entrance to it inviting.  This can also be done with a connecting garage door or backyard shed door.

8.) Make your own patio furniture.  Use old tires painted a bright color to make a coffee table or large planter on your deck or patio.

9.) Add a water feature to your space. This creates ambience with a soothing sound and also can actually make your space cooler. Remember to keep it clean and keep bug repellent or citronella candles nearby. Water can attract bugs if not maintained.

10.) Finally, DIY your own bird bath.  I love this simple idea of purchasing inexpensive pots painted and turned upside down to create a cheerful bird bath that will surely attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your garden. Try it!

Thanks for stopping by Party Fetti today.  Now, get outside and decorate with color for your next event or barbeque!

Feel free to stop by any of our shops if you need some summer PARTY DECORATIONS or PINWHEELS!
