Let’s get started with making these fun utensil holders.  Gather your supplies.  I’ve made it easy for you to order online- simply click on the supplies below.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

Mason jar
(use multi-surface or glass paint)
Black paint
Light green paint

White paint
Paint brushes
Jute twine

Once you have everything you need to get started, lay down some newspaper to protect your table or work area where you will be painting.

First, wipe down your jar or jars with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils from fingerprints and any dirt.  Allow to dry for about ten minutes.

Start by painting the lower part or the bottom of the jar with your lighter green paint and allow to dry. Add a second coat when dry.

Paint the top of the jar with red paint. Paint a second coat of red when dry.

After your initial two coats in each color are dry, paint snake-like curvy lines in a vertical direction on your lower green section to create the appearance of the watermelon rind.  Don’t be concerned with how even these two colors are at the middle because you are going to paint over the meetup point of the two colors on the jar which will therefore clean it up.

Next, divide your red and green painted sections on the jar by painting a nice even and straight line with your white paint.

Add a few watermelon seeds to the top red area in a random pattern.  TIP: Rather than painting the seeds by hand, I prefer to use the bottom handle of my paint brush to make the seeds. Just dip the pointed end of your brush into the black paint and simply add a round dot.  Then, immediately, before your dot dries, flip your brush and pull the dot out to a teardrop shape with the tip of your brush.  As a result, this is much easier than trying paint on a perfect seed shape.

Finally, allow your painted jar to dry for a few hours.  Add your jute twine bow at the neck of your jar. Next, fill it up with your forks, spoons and knives.  Now you are ready to serve your guests.

These are so adorable for any summertime gathering!

Watermelon Cake Recipe

WATERMELON CAKE RECIPE

Watermelon Cake Recipe

Summer and watermelon go together like cake and birthdays. . . so why not have all four!? Time to bake a summertime sweet dessert.  Watermelon puree and Jell-O give this cake the perfect flavor.  The frosting looks just like a sliced watermelon but is yummy too.

Watermelon Cake 1

Let’s get to baking and the cake recipe-

Ingredients

    Watermelon Cake

    • 1 box white cake mix
    • 1 (3 oz.) box of watermelon Jell-O powder (reserve 2 teaspoons for frosting)
    • 1/2 cup watermelon puree
    • 1/2 cup water
    • 1/2 cup oil
    • 4 eggs
    • 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
    • red food coloring

    Watermelon Cream Cheese Frosting

    • 8 oz. cream cheese (softened)
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
    • 5 cups confectioners’ sugar
    • 2 teaspoons watermelon puree
    • 2 teaspoons watermelon Jell-O powder
    • red and green food coloring

    Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line the bottom of 2 eight inch round pans with wax paper, and spray or grease the sides with cooking oil.
To make the watermelon puree: Cut chunks from the center of a fresh watermelon and remove any seeds. Place them in a blender and puree.  Set aside.
In a large bowl, combine cake mix and Jell-O.  Add water and oil; mix on medium speed with a mixer.  Add eggs, one at a time, beating well.  Add in the watermelon puree and beat until blended.  Finally, add red food coloring a drop at a time, until you reach the desired color.
Before adding your chocolate chips- coat them with a small amount of flour – this keeps them from sinking in your cake while it bakes.  Place chocolate chips and a teaspoon of flour in a ziploc bag; shake to coat.
Fold the chocolate chips into the batter. Pour into pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and butter together. Beat in watermelon puree. Gradually add sugar and Jell-O, beating until smooth. Color 1/3 of the frosting green, color the remaining 2/3 the same color as the cake.
Trim the brown edges off the cake before frosting it.  Use the pink frosting between the layers and on the top of the cake. Spread the green frosting on the sides and outer edge of the top of the cake. Lastly, press mini chocolate chips on the top of the cake frosting to mimic watermelon seeds.

Now slice and eat up! YUM!

    Summer Parties – Classic Themes

    SUMMER PARTY THEMES

Summer is almost here and its time to start planning that outdoor party!  Today I am sharing a roundup of ideal go-to themed parties for your next celebration.  While most of these are kids birthday parties, they are great summer themes for any event too – a Memorial Day family gathering, a barbacue, an adult backyard party, or an employee corporate event.

So grab your sunhat and cocktail and let’s get going to the party!

First up is the classic Lemonade party.  Nothing says summer like lemons!  This party was complete with an actual lemonade stand too.

Oh you know I love these two parties because both feature big PINWHEELS and the one above with a TISSUE TASSEL GARLAND!

Of course strawberries are synonymous with summer too so they make for the perfect theme at this Strawberry Shortcake party.  Love those PAPER FLOWERS on the candy baskets too.

There is no shortage of fruit at any of these parties- next is a watermelon party complete with little hand cut black seeds added to the pink GLOBES– so clever!

The spread at this watermelon party tablescape is stunning too.

A cherry party is perfect in the summer.  Love all the printed cherry images and the matching striped STRAWS.

Last is a picnic party at a public park- but this could be easily done in a backyard too.  That over the top cake decorated with miniature ants is adorable.  Anything GINGHAM or red and white checks is absolutely necessary at a picnic themed party- but looks great at any summer party too.
